Impact of Academic Stress on Students |
Colleges are the most crucial places for students, not only because they are places for imparting education but also because they mark the onset for the careers in the lives of youth. This time period is also most decisive because at this time there are a number of physical and emotional changes that occur in the lives of youth. There are innumerable pressures which the college students have to face in day-to-day life. According to Sax (1997) there has been an evident trend of the increase of stress among the college students. The high point of concern is that when the level of stress among students becomes extreme, they experience not only physical but also psychological harm (Murphy & Archer, 1996). Additionally, the colleges which impart medical education have an increased workload, which ultimately leads to stress in the lives of students and negatively affects the quality of their life. The problems become more serious when stress levels increase and begin to exhibit negative effects on not only the health but also the academic performance of students (Campbell & Svenson, 1992). In today’s fast and rapidly changing world, there is immense competition and the desire to excel among students has increased manifold. Success does not come easy, and students have to work diligently to ensure that they are efficient and capable of handling the pressures of the new globalized world.
