Critical essay

A critical essay is a critique or analysis of a book, poem, movie, story or novel. Writing a critical essay can be a challenging task for students as they may find difficulty in expressing their opinion. In critical essay writing, the writer is not expected to be critical or point to the weaker aspects of the subject, but should objectively analyze and present facts as they appear. Any critical thinking essay should not be written in the first person and must not include the personal opinion of the writer. Some key facts to remember when writing a critical essay are:

  • Analyse the work objectively
  • Critique the work by presenting evidence
  • Refer to authentic sources and expert authors for evidence
  • Present all facts without bias
  • Do not write in the first person
  • Do not include personal opinion
Do not criticize – only analyze
